International Affiliations

Affiliation of the Academy with the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities has been changed from that of a Partner to a Member, in recognition of our unique statutory role in organising, monitoring, assessing and accrediting medical and dental specialist training locally.

Substantive Equivalency Recognition between CME / CPD Programmes

The current CME / CPD programmes of Academy Colleges have been deemed substantively equivalent to Maintenance of Certification Programme of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, which is subject to review and renewal. Fellows of the Royal College who are living and practising in Hong Kong can use the CPD programme of Academy Colleges to maintain their membership and Fellowship with the Royal College in Canada without having to additionally participate in the Maintenance of Certification Programme.

The Academy continues to make further exploratory steps towards the substantive equivalency recognition between CME / CPD programmes and activities with overseas colleges and institutions, such as the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Continuing objectives of the Academy through the process are to enable and foster collaboration between CME / CPD programmes, and ensure that the programmes of Academy Colleges are on par with international standards and to exchange views on quality assurance.

Conjoint Examinations with Overseas Colleges

Medical and dental professionals are eager to attain internationally recognised postgraduate medical qualifications. Academy Colleges have made substantial efforts to maintain collaboration on training and conjoint examinations with leading overseas colleges in different forms under mutual agreements.

Conferences and Meetings

The Academy regularly organises educational conferences and seminars converging local and overseas educationists to exchange ideas and share experience in clinical training, examinations and assessments. We are honoured that these events were attended by medical leaders from the World Health Organization, the General Medical Council and Department of Health of the United Kingdom, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and other leading universities and institutions.

In 2017, the 1st International Medical Education Leaders Forum (IMELF-HKAM) titled “Moderation of Postgraduate Medical Education” was co-organised with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Hong Kong. An impressive line-up of world-renowned medical leaders gathered at the Academy Building to share invaluable experience and insights.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute of the Academy has spent tremendous effort in the global emergency medical teams project, partnered with the World Health Organization in classification and capacity building for teams in mainland China, and organised a global meeting at the Academy Building in 2016. Some attending institutions, such as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, are engaged in research on a wide scope of disaster preparedness and response topics.

Representatives from the Academy have been invited to various annual scientific and educational meetings of overseas Colleges to share professional skills and expertise, challenges and opportunities facing the healthcare system and implications, as well as to network with each other.

Reciprocal Use of Leisure Facilities

The well-being of Academy Fellows and specialist trainees remains a primary focus. The Academy has strengthened continued links with the Royal Society of Medicine, allowing reciprocal use of leisure facilities for Fellows and members, including lounge and accommodation as applicable.

Much has been accomplished since the inauguration of the Academy, and a great deal more is in progress or is being planned for the coming years. The Academy welcomes and will continue to consolidate international collaborative efforts in enhancing excellence in specialist medical education and practice through knowledge and expertise sharing leading to the best quality patient-centred care.
