Professor Tham is the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), S.H. Ho Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at CUHK, and the Director of CUHK Eye Centre. Internationally, Prof. Tham is the Secretary-General and CEO of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), which is the largest supranational ophthalmic organisation in the Asia-Pacific region, comprising 36 national ophthalmic member societies and regional subspecialty member societies. Membership of APAO member societies total over 86,000 ophthalmologists, which is around 59% of the total number of ophthalmologists in the world. Prof. Tham is the President of the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS), and the Founding President of the Hong Kong Glaucoma Society (HKGS). Prof Tham is also the Immediate Past President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (COHK), and the Immediate Past Treasurer of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).
Prof. Tham was recognised by Expertscape′s PubMed-based algorithms as the top 1% of scholars writing on Glaucoma in the previous 10 years. He was voted to become a member of ‵The Ophthalmologist Power List – Top 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists′ in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Prof. Tham has also received numerous other awards in recognition of his contributions to research and teaching in ophthalmology.
